Cooper Mill Shines in Old Town Alexandria

Cooper Mill Shines in Old Town Alexandria

On a recent Saturday evening, Cooper Mill was lively and comfortable. The nearly year-old establishment in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia, had a steady stream of customers. College football was on television. And most of the tables on the first floor were full.

Cooper Mill describes itself as a tavern and event space – there’s a private area on the second floor, which was hosting an event the night we visited. Located at 10 Duke Street, the building is in a former warehouse. The brick exterior continues inside. The banquette seats place you close to the neighboring table, but there’s enough room to keep a purse on the seat without crowding the next patron. The building is just a stone’s throw from the Potomac River. Outdoor seating enhances the restaurant’s charm. Find tables on the ground level, while the second-floor patio offers scenic views.

The second floor’s patio offers scenic views of the Potomac River.

The menu leans heavily into pizza – with a lineup of pies with red or white sauce. The 18-inch pies arrive at the table with a stand for easy reach. If your party is small, there’s no need to fear the large pie. Some pizzas are served by the slice. There are salads, hearty zepp sandwiches and Italian subs. And let’s not forget appetizers and desserts.

A charcuterie board was one of the numerous appetizer options available.

A charcuterie board featured the traditional cured meats and artisanal cheese with olives, grapes, pecans, marmalade and mustard. The hot honey slice had a kick and the bianco slice was garlicky. A slice of lemon mascarpone cake was light.
